Global aluminum production continues to grow

According to the International Aluminum Institute (IAI), 5.424 million tons of primary aluminum were produced in the world in September 2020, which is 4.0% more than in the same month last year.
At the same time, the average daily metal production reached 180.8 thousand tons, which is the maximum figure since June 2017. The growth compared to August of this year was about 1.5%.
In just nine months, according to IAI, the world produced 48.61 million tons of aluminum, which is 2.1% more than the same period a year ago.
Most of this increase comes from China. According to IAI statistics, 3.15 million tons of metal were obtained there in September, 8% more than a year earlier, and the increase in nine months amounted to 3.3% or almost 900 thousand tons. In just nine months in China 27.716 million tons of aluminum were smelted. The share of the PRC in world production has reached 57.0%.
In addition to China, aluminum production in the first nine months was increased by the countries of the Persian Gulf, North America, and Central and Eastern Europe (by only 0.4%). The largest decline was recorded in South America (by 11.7% compared to January-September 2019) and in Asia without China (by 3.6%).
